On the Page "Problems with Traditional Illustrations" the problems inherent in the traditional style of representing battlefield movements were pointed out. The power of the computer may help us develop newer methods of visualizing the battlefield. Gif files can be animated to represent battlefield action in ways never before possible.
This page shows a first draft of such an attempt by Ed Valerio -- "very much a work in process," he says. The scene illustrated is an imaginary battle between an assemblage of German tribesmen (top) fighting against three legions (bottom). The purpose of the illustration is to explore ways of illustrating battlefield actions and the drawings should not be construed as representing a real battle.
One cannot help but agree that the animated illustration does give a far better feel for the battle than the traditional boxes and arrows.
